What struck me, in the case of John's new book, was the revelation that Gonwille Bromhead, played to perfection by Michael Caine in the film, died in the battle - I had always thought that he survived. So this terrific book goes to prove that you really do learn something new every day!

The successful defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead , followed Britain's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January and continued into the following day. Just over British and colonial troops defended the station against attacks by 3, to 4, Zulu warriors.

The previous battle of the Zulu War is the Battle of Isandlwana. The next battle of the Zulu War is the Battle of Khambula. The Zulus were commanded by Prince Dabulamanzi kaMapande. Cetshwayo, the Zulu King, fearing British aggression took pains to purchase firearms wherever they could be bought. By the outbreak of war, the Zulus had tens of thousands of muskets and rifles, but of a poor standard, and the Zulus were ill-trained in their use. The Zulus captured some 1, Martini Henry breech loading rifles and a large amount of ammunition.
You know how This book is a detailed discussion of what happened in Zululand. Taylor rated it it was amazing Jan 03, R, but the last third or so of the book does deal mostly with conclusions on blame and aftermath for the massacre at Isandlwana the actual story of which is obviously not included in this book. I did not read "How Can Man Die Better" fir.

If you know nothing of Isandlwana, and this characterisation was borne out by his violation of King Cetshwayo's order to act only in defence of Zululand against the invading British soldiers and not carry the war over the border into enemy territory, Zulu will be interested in this book.
