He did not see America until he was 20, but spent his childhood wandering with his family in Italy and France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. His father had abandoned a medical career; his parents lived on a modest independent income. By the age of 11, Sargent was fluent in French and Italian and could get by in German. He and his two sisters were provided with piano teachers and sent to dancing classes. The emphasis was on capturing the flow of light on surface, seeking inflections and what was shimmering and in flux rather than solid mass or carefully delineated tonal structure.
