Further crashes and tinkles now accompany the release of this year's shortlist, which trims another seven novels to leave us with the most interesting finish-line tussle in years. This is the sort of symphonic, Olympian, ever-so-slightly-tedious novel that in other years might seem an evident contender for Booker reward; so was Anne Enright's Irish family epic The Green Road , which is now destined not to repeat the success of her other Booker-winning family epic The Gathering What we're left with is a prickly and unusual shortlist, full of subversion and unease, which implicitly challenges the idea that reading a novel should be a comfortable and relaxing experience. They wriggle, they struggle, and they resist comfortable categorisation. They also present a clutch of distinct and unusual voices.

The judges remarked on the variety of writing styles, cultural heritage and literary backgrounds of the writers on the shortlist, which includes new authors alongside established names. This is the second year that the prize, first awarded in , has been open to writers of any nationality, writing originally in English and published in the UK. The regret of what we left out was tempered by the enormous excitement we have in presenting the six books on the shortlist. The writers on the shortlist present an extraordinary range of approaches to fiction. They come from very different cultures and are themselves at very different stages of their careers.
