Gettmann shows that a scholarly book can be informative and lively reading at the same time. It is an excellent demonstration of how clarity and order can be imposed upon a chaos of detail and how statistics, often drab "facts and figures," can be translated into a lively discussion. By Richard A. Bloomington: Indiana U P, It does not significantly affect our knowledge of Maugham's life, but it is a much needed reminder to modern critics that Maugham's work deserves serious attention.

He sounds like a colorful character but since he's hardly ever active in a scene, and the need of his would-be biographer for details that William alone can provide. Somerset Maugham, published in Subtitled The Skeleton in the Cupboard, Maugham's novel raised contemporary ire for its satirical portraits. Hugh Walpole detected a cruel caricature of himself in the character of the meretricious author, Alroy Kear, and the superficially respectable Grand Old Man of English Letters, Edward Driffield, was commonly assumed to represent Thomas Hardy. The novel is written from the point of view of a middle-aged playwright, Willie Ashenden, who has been asked by Driffield's widow to supply his early memories of the author for inclusion in a sanitized biography. The narrative switches between the older Ashenden's cynical and witty musings on the London literary scene, and memories of his early life in Blackstable, a Kentish town where he originally encountered Driffield and his first wife Rosie Gann.

I love books that can be wordy and Victorian but had to laugh at Maugham because he did start to become what he did not like in other novels, he's hard to really know. Maugham does a commendable job at calling this kind of prejudice out and exposing it for ridicule. Description: Cakes and Ale is a satire of London literary society between the Wars. William Somerset Maugham was born at the British Embassy in Paris, France, where his father was an English lawyer handling the legal affairs of the British embassy. His mother died of tuberculosis while he was young, a death which traumatized him for life. Two years later, his father died of cancer, and he was sent to England to be cared for by his uncle, Henry MacDonald Maugham, the Vicar of Whitstable, in Kent. His uncle was cold and cruel, and the boarding school he attended, The King's School in Canterbury, was also miserable for him. At sixteen, he refused to continue at The King's School and he was allowed to travel to Germany, where he studied literature, philosophy and German at Heidelberg University. 👩‍🔧
