Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff: | ulsterartistsonline.org: Books

The book follows the marriage of seemingly perfect couple Lotto and Mathilde, exploring what it takes to make a marriage seem perfect. I try to like every single book I read. I try to start new books with a positive mindset, because in the end my goal is to read more books and encourage other women to do the same. But first, let me mention some of the things I thought were good about the book, before I so thoughtfully destroy it. Still, I have rarely if ever seen real, honest-to-God representations of these struggles portrayed in media.

Lauren Groff’s “Fates and Furies.”

Lotto short for Lancelot and Mathilde meet at a party, near the end of their time as Vassar undergraduates. The attraction is intense, and they get quickly married, just before graduation. Mathilde is mysterious. She seems to have no legible past, no obvious context. This is a characteristically patriarchal gesture: Mathilde seems to ask for little, and subsumes whatever desire for a career she may have had to his larger claims. The little she spoke of childhood was shadowed with abuse.

Salvation of school, scholarship, which were both ostentatiously decorated piles of crap. I guess it tells you a lot about the sort of person that reads the book. Secrets are my specialty? Definitely not either Gone Girl or Fates and Furies. My enemies aren't who you think they are?

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. I have wanted to read this book for the past like 2 or 3 years, ever since my close friend Iggy was reading it and was very engrossed in it. So much so that she was pretty much reading it every spare second she had and I wanted in on that action. Two years later, I finally got my hands on this book! Haha better late than never amirite? Fates and Furies is a story about a marriage over the span of twenty four years and takes place in New York. It all starts with Lotto and Mathilde, both very tall, good looking and at twenty two, they decide to get married after only meeting two weeks before and falling madly in love with each other.

Shelve The Friend. I have also read Fates and Furies and agree with your review completely. People told her she smiled like garlic, refusing to play safe by merely contouring the known, like nothing at all. Admirab.

But Lotto triumphs anyway. I suppose people who only read chick lit and beach reads may not enjoy it, but I prefer books you actually get something out of. The Incendiaries by R. I struggled.

Shelve My Sister, and lifts this story of a modern marriage out of the mundane. I found myself having plenty of empathy for the characters too, not being disgusted by them. The prose is not only beautiful and vigorously alert; it insists on its own heroic registration, is… More. Candace Chen, the Serial Killer.
