At first, Sarah misses home dearly, but she slowly falls in love with the family and the plains, and the family falls in love with her at the same pace. They weather the seasons together, including a great storm that damages the house, and Sarah constantly demonstrates her independence, hard-work, and bravery. At the end of the book, she leaves for town.
