In 1997 I began a spiritual practice that emphasized meditation. Simultaneously, a painting-related shoulder injury required me to re-evaluate my painting techniques. It seemed I had two choices: learn to paint with my left arm/hand or scale my paintings down in size so that I was basically using my wrist instead of my shoulder to paint. I chose to use 3x4 inch canvases and haven’t looked back since. I still meditate and find that quieting the mind is a similar to the silent state of my subjects. Both meditation and painting work best while being in the moment and allowing your attention to focus inward. Once inward, a whole new world presents itself. As William Blake says, “To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.”
