The narratives that find form in my collages speak not only to the symbolic and surreal, to the richness of color and coincidence, but tend to reveal the invisible threads of compulsion and grace that are woven beneath the surface of the seemingly obvious.
Sourced from dreams and mythic, folkloric elements, each piece I create flows between transparency and opacity, clarity and disorientation in equal measure. I strive to assemble collages that allow for the lightness of whimsy to engage the larger archetypal forces that invisibly prevail upon the psyche and hope to do so in much the way a dream might take a surprise turn, or a fairy tale a dark, disturbing twist.
Collage provides for the creation of story and the dismantling of its elements at the same time. It is a meditation for viewer and maker alike on the fleeting nature of the perceived world and the playful joy of dissembling and rebuilding - mentally and visually.
In seeking to illuminate the underlying forces percolating beneath the surface of image-based narrative, to literally unravel each story to its core impulse, I find myself fascinated by the energetics of abstraction. I have been building a new vocabulary of intuition through mark making and richly saturated pastel. Going forward, I hope to hone my ability to intuit and visually engage the fluid, liminal space that marks the boundary between narrative image and the abstracted energy that grounds it in psychic truth.
