Something happened to me when I began learning to paint about the time I was due to retire. I started seeing things as I had never seen them before. Colors, shapes, relationships — and so much more. I came to the realization that almost all art is, by its very nature, abstract. Thus, I endeavor to create suggestions on canvas or paper that may give the viewer just enough information to spark interest and imagination, and lead to unexpected connections with his or her own experience. That, at least, is my intention.
I also find myself intrigued by shapes that we usually overlook. Shadows and reflections especially pique my interest. Trying to capture the essence of these with paint or in printmaking is a never-ending challenge and delight.
I hold out the hope that viewers may also be moved to begin looking at the world and its endless variety with fresh perspective.
